The CJI suggested that special measures should be taken
to ensure legal aid and assistance to victims of rape and other heinous
crimes.

measures would be a 24-hour legal aid help line and legal aid clinic to
render timely legal advice.

hospitals.

She was lying in vegetative state for the last 40 years.

In the year 1973 she was choked with a chain by Sohanlal Walmiki before

She suffered
asphyxiation which damaged the brain.

Other nurses are taking care of her since then.

Her condition was critical (November 2013) and became
stable after administering antibiotics.

The Parliamentary Standing committee on Petroleum and
Natural Gas recommended that the states where gas production is taking place
should be given at least 50 percent of the total quantity produced.

THE PM
DECIDED NOT TO ATTEND CHOGM SUMMIT:
ü CHOGM - commonwealth heads of government
meeting
ü The CHOGM summit will be held in Colombo on
November 15 – 16.
ü The
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh decided not to attend the CHOGM.
ü The
pressure from Tamil Nadu parties including a resolution by the State Assembly
of Tamil Nadu forced the PM not to attend.
ü The
PM wrote to the Sri Lankan Presidnet Mahinda Rajapaksa and expressed regret and
the letter was handed over to the President by the Indian High Commission.
REASONS:
ü The
primary reason is to express the displeasure at Sri Lanka’s reluctance to
address alleged atrocities against Tamil civilians during final battles against
LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam).
ü The
failure of New Delhi’s influence on Colombo to effect a just settlement of the
Tamil questions is another reason.
ELECTIONS IN NORTHERN PROVINCIAL COUNCIL:
ü In
September 2013, on the insistence of India elections were conducted to the
Northern Provincial Council and Tamil National Alliance won the elections.
ü This
established a popularly elected administration.
WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE?
ü The
PM instead of sending external affairs minister to the attend the meet, he
should have attended as the minister is no substitute to the PM.
ü A
visit by the PM to Colombo and Jaffna would have been a powerful reaffirmation of
India in its stake and interest in the region.

held discussions on Kashmir related political developments.

The discussion took place in Pakistani High Commission in
